Filling the First Year Fridge

With all of the other important elements of moving in - such as getting your internet hooked up so you can check out the newest DormWise articles, getting your books for your classes, making your bed, and hanging up posters - you might not realize that you haven't yet stocked your fridge with the essentials that will get you through late study nights and long weekends.

While of course, there are an infinite number of options for your mini fridge, below are some suggestions that will keep you healthy and full through those first few weeks.

Drinks
Despite what you may think, your fridge is not just a place to store beer between Sunday and Thursday. In fact, using your fridge as a giant cooler means that you aren't using it for other important things such as:


  • Energy and health drinks - Stock up on some low calorie energy drinks, vitamin waters or bottled smoothies for afternoon study sessions when you need an extra jolt. Try to avoid diet or regular sodas that cause a sugary crash after a few hours.

  • Coffee grounds - If you're a coffee drinker, keep your grounds fresh by storing them in your fridge or mini freezer.

  • Milk - Small containers of milk are great for a cereal snack, coffee or hot chocolate, or even just to drink on its own.

Breakfast
Just because you can't make it to the dining hall before class doesn't mean you should skip the most important meal of the day! These items can give you a filling breakfast even while you're running late.

  • Yogurt - This fantastic morning treat comes in countless flavors and varieties. Keep a stock of yogurt for both breakfasts and sweet treats during the day and get your protein boost at the same time.

  • Meal replacement shakes - Even if you're not looking to lose weight, weight loss meal replacement drinks are packed full of protein, calcium and vitamins and can make a great breakfast when you're on the go.

Other Food
These are items that you should always have on hand and can be turned into a hearty snack or even a full meal. For great recipes, check out the Food and Drink section of the site.


  • Peanut Butter - Barring you have peanut allergies, this filling spread is a favorite of kindergarteners and college students alike. It can be eaten on crackers, tortillas, bread or fruit and provides you with filling proteins and healthy fats.

  • Cheese - Cheddar, Colby, Brie or Swiss, no matter what kind you get, cheese makes a great snack in a quesedilla, on apples and grapes, on crackers or even by itself.

  • Applesauce - All natural applesauce is low in calories and sugar and can really satisfy a sweet tooth if you want a quick snack during the day.

The above items are those no dorm fridge should be without. Best of all, they tend to be manageable in size and you should have room, even in a compact fridge for all of them, and even have some room left over for that ever-important alcohol.

I'd also recommend having things like nuts and seeds to snack on. They'll help when you're peckish and help you keep yourself from wasting too much money on junk food, not to mention keep you healthy :)

And you can make your own muesli out of it, and with honey and yoghurt, can be great for a snack, and for breakfast.
