Themed parties are in but in a dorm room, you've got limited decorations, light, space and supplies. Fortunately, that's exactly what you need for a 1920's Speakeasy themed party! Picture some dark back room above the bar, with only the closest group of friends (in case someone tips off the police to your illegal bar during the prohibition) where the music and drinks are flowing.
Instead of trying to get more light into your room, consider blacking out the windows with black or brown construction paper. If you can find a wooden bar, that would set a great scene for your party, but a table covered in brown fabric or construction paper would also work well. The best thing about this party is that the decorations can be sparse and simple - not a whole lot is necessary.
For music, see if you can find some blues, jazz or ragtime inspired tunes. Check out the sounds of Stevie Ray Vaughan (
), King Floyd (
), The Roaring 20s (
) or for some true 20s tunes, Billy Randolph and the High Hatters (
). While you'll be playing music from your computer or speakers, you might consider checking the local consignment stores or antique stores for an inexpensive old record player to decorate the scene.
Encourage your guests to dress up. Although the decorations are simple, the outfits don't have to be! Guys might wear jackets and hats while girls might look for knee length dresses with a fringe and a feather for their hair. (Flapper girls? Don't forget a flask tied to your leg... in the prohibition you never know what's available!).
For drinks you can choose from a number of the popular drinks that are still around today, including a martini cocktail, mint julep or gin and tonic. Make sure you have someone checking IDs... alcohol may be legal now, but only if you're over 21!
The 1920s make a great theme for a party and one that everyone will enjoy. Try to keep the air of secrecy and danger (it is the prohibition after all) alive for a fantastic party atmosphere.
