Inspiring Greatness

Just as it's important to make sure that you, as a campus leader, are hosting events, lectures, seminars and more to get the rest of the campus excited about your club or organization, it's also important to remember that the leaders in your group need some recognition as well. Take some time to organize a dinner, party or event of some sort for the leaders of your club, dorm, organization or group.

Most leadership positions on college campuses are unpaid, and even those positions that do receive a stipend still tend to require enormous amounts of effort throughout the year. Unfortunately, many students don't realize how much work goes into providing the leadership and events that occur on campuses throughout the year. Whether you are the president of your organization or just hold a small leadership position, you can help out by finding a way to recognize the leaders of your group. Here are a few easy and inexpensive suggestions for rewarding campus leadership:

1) Host a party. If you don't have funds to go out to dinner or have a large event, host a party in your dorm room for the group. Make a rule that there's no "shop talk" (unless you're relating funny stories about your experiences with the group) and everyone will have a great time hanging out with friends and relaxing from work.

2) Pot Luck. Everyone enjoys food, and usually people enjoy sharing their favorite kinds of food as well. Have a meeting where everyone brings one dish that they really enjoy, or that relates to your organization. It can be homemade or store bought but either way, it's a nice treat for everyone.

3) Paper plate awards. The most inexpensive fall back for budget strapped leaders is the paper plate award. All you need are white paper plates and assorted markers (other decorative supplies are optional). Each plate should be decorated with the award recipient's name and the name of the award they have won. The real fun in paper plate awards comes from making up ridiculous award titles such as "Most likely to skip a meeting award," "Secretly works 25 hours a day award" or "Actually doesn't attend this college award." Use inside jokes from your group to think of funny prizes everyone will enjoy.

You don't need to spend a lot of money to recognize the leaders in your organization and it can really boost the morale, productivity and fun level of your group.
